              Mais l’explication du feu électrique doit non-seulement con-

              venir aux phénomènes du passage de la décharge électrique
                <lb/>
              à travers l’air, elle doit aussi être applicable à tous les phé-
                <lb/>
              nomènes de lumière et de calorique qui sont produits par
                <lb/>
              l’électricité, dans le vide, dans les liquides et dans les so-
                <lb/>
              lides. Il est difficile de concevoir comment, dans l’expé-
                <lb/>
              rience intéressante de Davy, où l’eau est échauffée jus-
                <lb/>
              qu’à l’ébullition par l’action de la pile voltaïque, il pour-
                <lb/>
              rait y avoir une compression, ou quel est le corps qui, par
                <lb/>
              sa compression, laisse dégager du calorique. On peut donc
                <lb/>
              regarder cette explication comme réfutée par nombre de
                <lb/>
              faits découverts postérieurement.</note>
