                  diani, hauendo auuertito nell'arena alcune figure di Geometria, in que

                  ſto modo ſi dice hauer eſclamato. </s>
                  <s id="s.005280">Speriamo bene o compagni, poi,
                    <lb/>
                  che qui ueggio l'orme de gli huomini. </s>
                  <s id="s.005281">Detto queſto incontanente
                    <lb/>
                  s'auuiò alla terra di Rodi, & dritto nel Gimnaſio ſi conduſſe; doue di­
                    <lb/>
                  ſputando della Filoſofia fu largamente donato, che non ſolo ornò ſe
                    <lb/>
                  ſteſſo, ma anche a quelli, che con eſſo lui erano ſtati, donò ampiamente il ueſtire, & le al
                    <lb/>
                  tre coſe al uiuere neceſſarie: ma uolendo i ſuoi compagni ritornar nella patria, & addi­
                    <lb/>
                  mandandogli, che coſa egli uoleſſe, che in nome ſuo diceſſero a caſa: Egli coſi comandò
                    <lb/>
                  allhora, che diceſſero; eſſer biſogno a i figliuoli apparecchiare poſſeſsioni, & uiatichi di
                    <lb/>
                  tal ſorte, che poteſſero inſieme con loro nuotando uſcire del naufragio: perche quelli ſo

                  no i ueri preſidij della uita, a i quali ne la iniqua forza della fortuna, nè la mutatione del­
                    <lb/>
                  lo ſtato, nè la ruina della guerra puo alcun danno recare. </s>
                  <s id="s.005282">Nè meno Theophraſto ac­
                    <lb/>
                  crebbe la predetta ſentenza, il quale eſſortando gli huomini piu preſto ad eſſer uirtuoſi,
                    <lb/>
                  che fidarſi nelle ricchezze, coſi dice, ſolo il uirtuoſo eſſer quello tra tutti gli huomini, il
                    <lb/>
                  quale nè foreſtieri ne i luoghi altrui, nè pouero d'amici, quando perde i familiari, ouero
                    <lb/>
                  i propinqui, ſi puo chiamare: ma in ogni città è cittadino, & ſolo puo ſenza timore ſprez
                    <lb/>
                  zare gli ſtrani auuenimenti della fortuna. </s>
                  <s id="s.005283">ma chi penſa eſſer munito non da gli aiuti della
                    <lb/>
                  dottrina, ma della buona ſorte andando per uie ſdruccioloſe pericola in uita non ſtabile,
                    <lb/>
                  ma inferma. </s>
                  <s id="s.005284">Lo Epicuro ſimigliantemente afferma la fortuna dar poche coſe a i ſaui huo
                    <lb/>
                  mini, ma quelle, che ſono grandiſsime, & neceſſarie con i penſieri dell'animo, & della
                    <lb/>
                  mente eſſer gouernate. </s>
                  <s id="s.005285">Queſte coſe coſi eſſere molti Filoſofi hanno detto, & ancho i
                    <lb/>
                  poeti, i quali hanno ſcritto le antiche Comedie pronunciarono le medeſime ſentenze nel­
                    <lb/>
                  la Scena, come Eucrate, Chionide, Ariſtofane, & con queſte ſpecialmente Alexi: il qua
                    <lb/>
                  le dice per ciò deuerſi laudare gli Athenieſi: perche le leggi di tutti i Greci sforzano, che i
                    <lb/>
                  padri ſieno da i figliuoli ſoſtentati, ma quelle de gli Athenieſi non tutti, ma quelli, che
                    <lb/>
                  haueſſero nelle arti i loro figliuoli ammaeſtrati. </s>
                  <s id="s.005286">Percioche tutti i doni della fortuna quan
                    <lb/>
                  do ſi danno da quella, facilmente ſi toglieno: ma le diſcipline congiunte con gli animi no
                    <lb/>
                  ſtri non mancano per alcun tempo, ma durano ſtabilmente con noi fino all'ultimo della
                    <lb/>
                  uita. </s>
                  <s id="s.005287">Et però io grandiſsime gratie renderò a mei progenitori, i quali approuando la leg
                    <lb/>
                  ge de gli A thenieſi, mi hanno ammaeſtrato nelle arti, & in quella ſpecialmente, che ſen­
                    <lb/>
                  za lettere, & ſenza quella raccomunanza di tutte le dottrine, che in giro ſi uolge, non
                    <lb/>
                  puo per alcun modo eſſer commendata. </s>
                  <s id="s.005288">hauendo adunque, & per la cura de i miei pro­
                    <lb/>
                  genitori, & per la dottrina de i miei precettori accreſciute in me quelle copie di diſcipli­
                    <lb/>
                  ne, & dilettandomi di coſe pertinenti alla uarietà delle cognitioni, & artificij, & delle
                    <lb/>
                  ſcritture de commentari, io ho acquiſtato con l'animo quelle poſſeſsioni, delle quali ne
                    <lb/>
                  uien queſta ſomma di tutti i frutti, che io non ho piu neceſsità alcuna, & che io ſtimo
                    <lb/>
                  quella eſſer la proprietà delle ricchezze di deſiderare niente piu. </s>
