                <s id="s.007994">DICESI che in Efeſo nobile, & ampia città di Greci è ſtata da i loro

                maggiori con dura conditione, ma con ragione non iniqua un'antica leg
                  <lb/>
                ge ordinata: percioche l'Architetto quando piglia a fare un'opera publi
                  <lb/>
                ca, promette prima quanta ſpeſa ui ha d'andare. </s>
                <s id="s.007995">fatta la ſtima al magi­
                  <lb/>
                ſtrato ſi obligano i ſuoi beni, fin che l'opera ſia finita, la quale fornita,
                  <lb/>
                quando la ſpeſa riſponde a punto a quanto s'è detto, con decreti, & ho­
                  <lb/>
                nori l'Architetto uiene ornato; & ſimilmente ſe non piu del quarto ſi ſpende, quello ag­
                  <lb/>
                giugner ſi deue alla ſtima, & ſi riſtora del publico, & egli à niuna pena è tenuto: ma quan
                  <lb/>
                do piu della quarta parte ſi ſpende, egli ſi piglia il dinaro de i ſuoi beni al fornimento del­
                  <lb/>
                l'opera. </s>
                <s id="s.007996">Dio uoleſſe, che i dei immortali fatto haueſſero, che non ſolamente alle publi­
                  <lb/>
                che, ma alle priuate fabriche quella legge fuſſe ſtata al popolo Romano ordinata, perche
                  <lb/>
                non ſenza caſtigo gli ignoranti ci aſſaſsinerebbeno, ma ſolamente quegli, che con ſotti­
                  <lb/>
                gliezza delle dottrine prudenti ſono, ſenza dubbio farebbeno profeſsione d'Architettura,
                  <lb/>
                nè i padri di famiglia indotti ſarebbeno a gettar infinite ſpeſe, perche poi da i loro beni
                  <lb/>
                ſcacciati foſſero, & gli Architetti conſtretti dal timor della pena piu diligentemente il con
                  <lb/>
                to della ſpeſa faceſſero, accioche i padri di famiglia, a quello, che prouiſto haueſſero, o
                  <lb/>
                poco piu aggiugnendo, drizzaſſero la forma delle fabriche loro: percioche colui, che puo
                  <lb/>
                prouedere di quattrocento, ſe accreſcierà cento piu, hauendo ſperanza di condur l'ope­
                  <lb/>
                ra a compimento, con diletto, & piacere, è trattenuto: ma chi aggrauato dalla metà
                  <lb/>
                della ſpeſa, o di piu, perduta la ſperanza, & gettata la ſpeſa rotto il tutto con animo di­
                  <lb/>
                ſperato, è conſtretto a laſciar ogni coſa. </s>
                <s id="s.007997">Nè pur queſto difetto è ne gli edifici, ma ancho
                  <lb/>
                ne i doni, che dal magiſtrato ſi danno al foro de i gladiatori, & alle ſcene de i giuochi, a
                  <lb/>
                i quali nè dimora, nè indugio ſi concede, ma la neceſsità con prefiſſo tempo di fornirgli
                  <lb/>
                conſtrigne, come ſono le ſedi de gli ſpettacoli, & il porui delle tende, & tutte quelle co­
                  <lb/>
                ſe, che all'uſanze della ſcena, al ueder del popolo con fattura, & apparato ſi fanno. </s>

                queſte coſe ueramente biſogna hauer del buono, & penſarui ben ſopra, perche niuna di
                  <lb/>
                queſte coſe ſi puo fare ſenza induſtria, & manifattura, & ſenza uaria, & riſuegliata uiuaci
                  <lb/>
                tà di ſtudi. </s>
                <s id="s.007999">Perche adunque tai coſe ordinate ſono a queſto modo non pare, che ſia fuori
                  <lb/>
                di propoſito, prima che ſi dia principio alle opere, che cautamente, & con diligenza ſi
                  <lb/>
                eſpediſchino le ragioni loro. </s>
                <s id="s.008000">Quando adunque nè la legge, nè la conſuetudine ci puo for

                zare a queſto, & ogni anno i Pretori, & gli Edili per li giuochi apparecchiar deono le ma
                  <lb/>
                chine, ho giudicato non alieno, poi che ne i libri paſſati s'è detto de gli edifici, in que­
                  <lb/>
                ſto, che ha la ſomma terminatione del corpo dell' Architettura, eſponer con precetti,
                  <lb/>
                quali ſiano i principij ordinati delle machine a queſto conuenienti. </s>
