                  Che coſa ſia Proportione, egli ſi dirà nel ſeguente capo. </s>

                  Et il ſentimento ſarebbe che il Diſcorſo poteſſe dimoſtrare, cioè rendere

                  la ragione delle coſe fabricate con ſolertia, & proportione, eſſendo l'ufficio dello Architetto
                    <lb/>
                  approuare le coſe ragioneuoli. </s>
                  <s id="s.000262">Ma ſia quale ſi uoglia il ſenſo, tutto è conforme al uero. </s>

                  creta intelligenza ſi tragge anchora dalle coſe dichiarate: & prima che lo Artefice riſpetto al­
                    <lb/>
                  l'opera tiene doppia conſideratione: poi tiene doppia affettione a quelle conſiderationi riſponden­
                    <lb/>
                  te. </s>
                  <s id="s.000264">La prima conſideratione è una ſemplice notitia uniuerſale, per la quale ſi dice, che l'huomo
                    <lb/>
                  ſa, quanto ſi richiede affine che l'opera rieſca, & niente piu ui aggiugne. </s>
                  <s id="s.000265">L'altra è una notitia
                    <lb/>
                  particolare, & proſſima all'operare che conſidera il tempo, il modo, il luogo, la materia. </s>
                  <s id="s.000266">Da
                    <lb/>
                  queſta particolare cognitione naſce una affettione, che muoue l'huomo a comandare, & ad ope­
                    <lb/>
                  rare, come ſecondo la prima conſideratione l'huomo ſi compiaceua, & in uniuerſale abbraccia­
                    <lb/>
                  ua non l'opera, ma la cognitione, & però non è ſufficiente queſta ſola conſideratione: ſola del di­
                    <lb/>
                  ſcorſo, ſola dell'uniuerſale: ma ſi richiede, quella ſeconda notitia, & quella ſeconda affettione
                    <lb/>
                  laquale è ripoſta nella fabrica. </s>
                  <s id="s.000267">Dichiarita la diffinitione dell'Architettura, & dichiarito il na
                    <lb/>
                  ſcimento di quella, hora uiene Vitr. a formare lo Architetto, coſa molto ragioneuole, & con
                    <lb/>
                  ueniente, come ſi uedrà dal ſeguente. </s>

                  <s id="s.000269"> Dalle dette coſe ne ſegue, che quelli Ar­
                    <lb/>
                  chitettori i quali ſenza lettere tentato hanno di affaticarſi, & eſſercitarſi con le mani, non han
                    <lb/>
                  no potuto fare, che s'habbiano per le fatiche loro acquiſtato riputatione, & quelli, che ne
                    <lb/>
                  i diſcorſi, & nella cognitione delle lettere ſolamente fidati ſi ſono, l'ombra, non la coſa,
                    <lb/>
                  pare che habbiano ſeguitato. </s>
                  <s id="s.000270">Ma chi l'una, & l'altra di queſte coſe hanno bene appreſo, co­
                    <lb/>
                  me huomini di tutte armi coperti, & ornati, con credito, & riputatione, hanno illoro inten
                    <lb/>
                  to facilmente conſeguito. </s>

                  Si come alla natural generatione ſi richiede l'uno & l'altro ſeſſo, & ſenza uno di loro niente
                    <lb/>
                  ſi concepe: coſi allo eſſer Architetto che è una artificiale generatione unitamente il diſcorſo,
                    <lb/>
                  & la Fabrica ſi richiede. </s>
                  <s id="s.000272">Et ſe alcuno ſi perſuadeſſe eſſer Architetto con la fabrica ſola, oue­
                    <lb/>
                  ro col diſcorſo ſolo, egli s'ingannerebbe, & ſarebbe ſtimato coſa imperfetta. </s>
                  <s id="s.000273">Et di gratia ſe uno
                    <lb/>
                  haueſſe il ſapere ſolamente, & uſurpare ſi uoleſſe il nome di Architetto, non ſarebbe egli ſotto­
                    <lb/>
                  poſto alle offeſe de gli eſperti? </s>
                  <s id="s.000274">non potrebbe ogni manoale (dirò coſi) rimprouerargli, & dirgli
                    <lb/>
                  che fai tu? </s>
                  <s id="s.000275">dall'altra parte ſe per hauere un lieue eſſercitio, & alquanto di pratica, di ſi gran no
                    <lb/>
                  me degno eſſer ſi credeſſe, non potrebbe uno intelligente, & letterato chiudergli la bocca, di­
                    <lb/>
                  mandandogli conto, & ragione delle coſe ſatte? </s>
                  <s id="s.000276">& però biſogna eſſer ornati, & armati di tut­
                    <lb/>
                  te arme per acquiſtare la uittoria, & il uanto d'Architetto. </s>
                  <s id="s.000277">Biſogna eſſer coperto per difeſa,
                    <lb/>
                  armato per offeſa, ornato per gloria, maneggiando la iſperienza con l'Artificio. </s>
                  <s id="s.000278">perche adun­
                    <lb/>
                  que i puri pratichi non hanno acquiſtato credito? </s>
                  <s id="s.000279">perche l'Architettura naſce da diſcorſo. </s>

                  che ſolo i letterati? </s>
                  <s id="s.000281">percioche l'Architettura naſce da Fabrica. </s>

                  Cioè dal naſcimento dell'Architettura, che uiene da Fabrica, & da diſcorſo, cioè ope­

                  ra, & ragione ne ſegue quello, che egli dice. </s>
                  <s id="s.000283">Ma in queſto luogo potrebbe alcuno dubitare, &
                    <lb/>
                  dire, ſeu ramente l'Arte è nello intelletto, & nella mente, perche cagione ha detto Vitr. che
                    <lb/>
                  quelli, i quali nel ſapere ſi ſono fidati, l'ombra non la coſa, pare, che habbiano ſeguitato? </s>

                  ſpondo, che le coſe dello intelletto alla piu parte ombre paiono, & il uolgo ſtima le coſe, in quan­

                  to, che a i ſenſi, & a gli occhiſottopoſte ſono. </s>

                  ne per la conſuetudine, perche le genti non ſono auezze a diſcorrere. </s>
